PURITY OF HONEY                                   GOLDEN ANGELS APIARY

Honeybees are extremely susceptible to many pesticides, especially neo-nicotinoids, commonly used in agricultural.   Bees kept close to some agricultural crops and orchards will not survive certain applications and sprays and, unfortunately for them, do  not live to return to the hive.

It is the honeybee's high mortality rate in the face of toxic chemicals that assures us that contaminated nectar does not enter the beehive.  The baby larvae bees are protected and the colony is assured of a strong work force of new bees coming on with the next generation and we can also be assured of the purity of Honey.

All our honeybee colony yards are located in rural areas of the Shenandoah Valley and are large acreage, open pasture areas used for animal grazing.  Beyond that, our honeybee health maintenance practices do not include any toxic chemical applications.

We have at times used many different natural methods, such as volatile aromatic oils and mineral oil and vinegar misting procedures.  We currently use non-toxic formic acid treatment during the post-harvest period to control parasitic varroa mites.  It is a concentrated but natural method.

Formic acid occurs naturally in the stings of insects of the family of Hymenoptera, which incidentally includes the venom of honeybee and ant stings.  In fact, its name comes from the Latin word for "ant", formica, referring to its early isolation by the distillation of ant bodies.  It is a naturally occurring component of the atmosphere due primarily to forest emissions.  Information from Wikipedia.org.

We always strive to maintain the purity of our honey by scrupulously avoiding the toxic treatments used by some, even though these are considered safe by testing done by our industry organizations.  We would prefer not to introduce any chemical into the colony.

Beeswax itself acts as a "sponge" and absorbs compounds put into the closed capacity of the beehive and then cannot be boiled or melted or cleansed out of the wax.  In beeswax used for cosmetic purposes, it is important to use only small beekeeper's prepared wax in those items that will be placed on the skin.

We also maintain practices that encourage the bee's general health and vigor and are natural to their foraging and reproductive cycles.  We do not engage in pollinations services nor transport our bees long distances, which we feel tends to add to their stresses and further weaken them, making them more vulnerable to diseases.
